Eric Lewis – Teacher and Virtuoso

July 21st, 2010  |  Published in Eric Lewis

I thought I’d write a few words about the maestro himself. The course is very much about Eric and the Eric Lewis method to learn to play violin, so a little background might be useful. He is a native New Yorker to quote the title of a 1970s disco hit. His early musical training was at the Manhattan School of Music where he received both Bachelor and Master performance degrees.

He studied with the late Rachmael Weinstock, a violinist who specialized in chamber music. Professor Weinstock was the first violinist of the Manhattan String Quartet in the 1930s, 2nd violinist of the Roth Quartet in the 1940s and a member of the New York Trio in the 1950s. Right up to his death in 1996 at the age of 86 he was renowned for his talent as a violinist and equally importantly as a fine teacher, having been Professor Emeritus at the Manhattan School of Music.

Eric Lewis carries the tradition of fine playing and teaching forward to this day. The Manhattan String Quartet had disbanded in the late 1930s but Lewis and 3 contemporaries relaunched the group in 1968 and it has been playing now for over 40 years. The current ensemble also includes Calvin Wiersma, another violinist, John Dexter, who plays the viola and Chris Finckel their cellist. As well as playing 1st violin in the Quartet, Eric Lewis also plays with other ensembles and is a soloist and conductor in his own right. He has toured the world and has made several critically acclaimed recordings and his performances span the repertoire from classical to contemporary works.

As well as an accomplished performer, Eric Lewis is also a renowned teacher. He is Professor of Music and Director of Chamber Music and Orchestral Studies at Western Connecticut State University and spends much of his time traveling and training young violinists. He is committed to helping the performing careers of young artists and has performed over a thousand concerts especially for children. The Violin Master Pro video classes is another form of Eric’s delight in spreading the gospel of good musicianship and has seamlessly moved his music classes online.
